Why mold thrives in Huntsville
NOAA counts about 935 hours a year at the Huntsville/Madison station with the wet-bulb temperature above 73°F. Humid air, warm summers and crawlspace homes give mold plenty of chances. Storms add leaks: NOAA lists a 100-year rainfall rate of 3.5 inches per hour, and after April 27, 2011, when tornadoes hit Madison County six times, many homes sat open to the weather while waiting for repairs. Whether mold follows a storm or slowly grows behind a vanity, recovery follows the same steps.
Step 1: Stop the moisture
Find and fix the water source first:
- roof, window and siding leaks;
- plumbing leaks and AC condensate overflow;
- damp crawlspaces without an intact vapor barrier;
- high indoor humidity from an oversized or poorly set air conditioner.
Step 2: Dry everything
Use fans and dehumidifiers. In humid weather, keep windows closed and let the AC and dehumidifiers work. Wet materials that stay damp for days are likely to grow mold.
Step 3: Small jobs and big jobs
A small patch on a hard surface can often be cleaned by a homeowner with gloves, eye protection and a respirator, using detergent and water. Large areas, mold in walls or ducts, or mold after flooding need a professional. Discard porous materials that stay moldy.
Step 4: Choosing a remediation company
Ask for a written scope: the areas affected, containment, removal, drying and cleaning, and how completion will be documented. Get more than one quote. A company that cannot explain the moisture source has not solved the problem.
Step 5: Insurance and complaints
Many policies cover mold only when it results from a sudden covered loss. Photograph the damage, keep every receipt and read your policy. The Alabama Department of Insurance asks consumers to contact their insurance company or agent first. If that fails, its Consumer Services Division forwards a complaint to the company, which must respond to the department; the division reviews whether the company followed the policy terms. The division's phone number is 334-241-4141.
Crawlspace care
Many Huntsville homes sit over crawlspaces. Check that the ground is covered by a vapor barrier, that water drains away from the foundation, and that insulation is not wet or hanging. A crawlspace contractor can advise on sealing or encapsulation if moisture keeps coming back.
Prevention
- Watch indoor humidity with a hygrometer.
- Run exhaust fans in baths and kitchens.
- Keep gutters and downspouts flowing.
- Service the AC so it removes moisture.
Records
Keep photos, invoices, moisture readings and remediation reports for future buyers and insurers.
